Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a kid. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater in the daylight. DuVernay instantly fell in love when she showed her that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's example the power of art as an instrument for activism. DuVernay's mother also had a social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to communicate by means of artwork. DuVernay was raised living with family members in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer months and was inspired to create a film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay was in college when she became interested in production for broadcast journalism. She started as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to sit at the house of a member of the jury, and then look through their trash. Following her disappointment with journalism by the tasks she was handed, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist at small production studios right out of high school. In this role, she launched her own company for public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
